Cereal Crops

With a difficult harvest this year it is nice to see, at the time of writing, a band of high pressure offering a good weather window to tidy up harvest and provide a good opportunity for autumn planting. As highlighted in the last news letter pre/peri emergence herbicides should be a priority to get your crops off to the very best of starts. We will be monitoring crops for mildew in the early stages as crop trials show that there is a potential 0.3t/ha yield increase from applying a mildewicide if necessary. Also where Deter seed dressing has not been used it is essential to apply an insecticide to your cereals to protect against BYDV which causes yield losses of up to 30%. Finally monitor crops for gout fly eggs. Evidence suggests that treatment is economic in winter crops if eggs are found on more than half the plants at GS12
