Liver Fluke update

Although we have had weather which would suggest a lower fluke burden this year residual infection from last year will be extremely high.

Metacercariae (the stage of fluke after leaving the mud snail) can survive prolonged periods of dry cold conditions. - they can exist on Hay for 18 months & stll be viable

Fluke affects both Sheep & Cattle

Fluke really is a voracious parasite

Each adult fluke can produce 50,000 eggs per day

In a moderate infection of 100 - 200 Fluke blood loss can be 1 pint per week

Control is very cost effective but timing and choice of flukicide is critical
